Scaling & Root Planing

Gum disease is caused by the accumulation of bacteria in your mouth. Some of these bacteria are hiding in the area beneath the gum line where we can’t reach with a conventional dental cleaning. Instead, we can remove it with a procedure known as scaling. Afterward, once we’ve eliminated all the plaque and tartar that has built up around and beneath the gums, we can smooth out (or plane) the roots of the teeth in order to prevent the accumulation of bacteria in the future.

Antibiotic Therapy

Antibiotic therapy is used to continue fighting gum disease after scaling and root planing have been performed. We will apply Arestin microspheres directly into the pockets between the teeth and gums. The microspheres are filled with medication that is slowly released over the course of a couple of weeks. This is an effective way to kill bacteria that lives where regular cleaning techniques can’t reach. New antibiotics may be applied after each scaling and root planing session.
