Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Typically, dental insurance plans divide up various procedures and place them into categories, with each receiving a certain level of coverage. The most common are preventive, basic restorative, advanced restorative, and cosmetic. Preventive treatments typically receive the most coverage, because they not only stop many dental issues, but also allow a dentist to take care of minor problems before they turn into major ones. For both your health and your wallet, it’s best to use your insurance to mostly pay for preventive care.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Here is how the different categories work for most dental insurance plans:

  • Preventive treatments are covered 100% (check-ups, cleanings, X-rays)
  • Basic restorative treatments are covered 80% (fillings, bonding)
  • Advanced restorative treatments are covered 50% (crowns, bridges, extractions)

Cosmetic procedures such as veneers and whitening are usually not covered because they are considered to be elective. To help make these treatments easily affordable, we offer flexible financing through CareCredit in our dental office.
